Basswood Shutters

If you are searching for robust, durable, high-quality hardwood shutters, basswood timber is a great choice. Whether you are planning on installing window shutters in your bedroom, across large patio doors, or even within a small porthole window, basswood will provide the versatile material you need.

What is basswood?

Basswood is a hardwood timber which sets the standard for high-quality plantation shutters, and it has been used throughout the world for more than 30 years. For those who manufacture high-end shutters, the soft and light timber is perfect for hand carving, and it also benefits from a straight grain, which increases stability and prevents warping. If you are looking for a long-lasting, durable yet lightweight timber, basswood is the material of choice.

The benefits of basswood hardwood shutters

When you choose basswood as the material for your timber shutters, everything from the frame to the louvres will be manufactured from this hardwood, to ensure excellent strength, durability and the high-quality we are known for. Unlike some shutter suppliers, we use hardwood frames to provide a strong and stable position for our hinge points, which means the panels can fix in place with absolutely no movement.

The timber we use is FSC certified, so you also benefit from the peace of mind in knowing that your shutters have been sustainably sourced and fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The slow growth combined with high demand around the world does make basswood difficult to source and it is more expensive than alternative hardwoods such as Poplar or Monterey Pine. However, if your budget can stretch to basswood, it will provide a stunning finish with great results for many years to come.

Whatever your interior design, basswood will provide the versatility you need for a painted or stained finish. Whether you are looking for high-quality white plantation shutters or internal shutters with a traditional stain, basswood will provide the smooth and consistent surface required

A range of American basswood shutter designs

Basswood is a popular material for many shutter designs, which will all improve insulation, privacy, and light control. The following are examples of our most popular shutter designs, where basswood has proved to be an excellent material of choice:

When it comes to solid timber shutters, the natural quality of the wood is very important, and basswood is the perfect choice. It is the most stable hardwood available, so it will provide the strength and durability required for these heavy panels.

This style of shutter will cover the whole window, however there are two independent sections which cover the top and bottom of the panels. This provides full and flexible control over light and privacy, with a premium design that works well with the quality of basswood.

This is our most popular design, and our full height shutters are an excellent choice for those which are looking for complete coverage of their windows, with the ability to control light and privacy.

Our bespoke shutters can be manufactured to suit any window shape, from completely round porthole designs through to large, modern apex windows. The curves and angles within our shaped shutters are perfect for basswood, where it can be carved and moulded into beautiful designs.

Otherwise known as half height shutters, this continental style is designed to cover the bottom section of the window. The natural light is able to enter through the top section of the window, and you benefit from additional privacy through the lower section.

The uniform and elegant finish of basswood is perfect for every shutter style, and we can provide a range of stains, paints and even colour match paints to create a bespoke finish for your home.
